Our journey began over a decade ago with aging grandparents who lived in residential homes that no longer suited their stage of life–not ready for assisted living but overwhelmed with the care of a multi-story home. Limited options were available in their home state of Ohio, so we turned our sights to our state of North Carolina. The results were parallel–very few choices that fit the lifestyle they were looking for. In sharing our story, we found that others were facing the same challenges with aging family members. Diving into some research, we discovered that the problem is compounding with a coined phrase of “silver tsunami,” whereby the number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to increase from 58 million in 2022 to 82 million by 2050. From firsthand experience, we know that America does not have the housing to support 24 more million Americans in this age group. Of the new homes being built, 85% of those from the Midwest to the Southeast are 2-story homes and not suitable accommodation for the wave of aging seniors.

Our personal challenge, accompanied by the supporting data, was the inspiration for our Easy Living Communities. The needs of our aging parents and grandparents charted the framework for our thoughtfully designed communities and homes. Our passion for building and developing at River Rock was met with a unique opportunity to service the growing active adult demographic.

For the reasons mentioned above, we are redefining Active Adult living with our River Rock – An Easy Living Community® brand with direct focus on homes with:

1. Great accessibility: No steps/wider hallways, etc.
2. No maintenance: We handle it all, from light bulbs to furnace filter replacement.
3. No ownership responsibility: Use funds from their home sale to have fun (FUNDS FOR FUN).
4. Community charm: Neighborhood-focused environment with resort-like amenities

We created three rental product types to meet all stages of active adult living:   

1. Cottages: Detached ranch homes with attached garages (1200 to 1900 square feet)
2. Flats: Attached ranch homes with attached garages (1,350 to 1,500 square feet)
3. Manor Homes: Multi-story rental units focused on community & fun-filled social interaction.
